Recreation and Outings

Recreation in Sobriety

While in active addiction, many lose sight of themselves and the things that used to be important to them. For instance, many people who suffer from substance abuse problems find that their relationships, careers, aspirations, accomplishments, and even their own well-being are no longer as important compared to alcohol or drugs. As such, helping people to reconnect and rediscover themselves as part of the recovery process is a primary objective of Coalition Recovery. Besides utilizing the latest therapies and well-rounded treatments, we encourage patients to take time for themselves by enjoying the many recreational activities we offer. But it’s not just about personal enjoyment; there are quantifiable benefits to recreation, which is why recreation outings are prominent features here at Coalition Recovery.

Importance of Recreational Activities - Mental Health

Everyone needs to take a break every now and then. Whether it’s because of a job, relationships, or otherwise, stress is something that is known to have various well-known effects on both the body and the mind. For this reason, there has been a growing body of research into the effects of recreation, particularly the benefits of making some time for recreational activities.

According to current research, there are marked benefits of recreation. Of those benefits, people who make time for recreational activities exhibit a greater level of overall alertness and, perhaps most importantly, are much more resilient to stress and anxiety. It’s even been found that participating in recreational groups and socially-supported physical activities has been able to decrease overall stress levels, alleviate anxiety, and even reduce symptoms of certain neurological illnesses, including Alzheimer’s disease. Plus, people who enjoy recreational activities regularly are more inclined to participate in volunteer work, which causes a community-level ripple effect due to being beneficial for people beyond just those who are enjoying the recreation.

In addition to recreation and leisurely activities being able to decrease overall stress and anxiety levels, studies show that populations of individuals who make time for recreation exhibit much lower obesity levels, improves self-esteem and self-worth, and results in lower rates of depression. Moreover, there are countless social benefits to recreation. For instance, those who make time for recreation and leisure report experiencing a strong sense of community and belonging; in turn, this further enhances one’s sense of self-value and makes individuals better able to develop healthy relationships with others.

Speaking of the social aspects of recreation, one of the most understated benefits of leisurely activities is that they’re a social experience, giving individuals an opportunity to make connections with others. Similarly, individuals who participate in leisurely and recreational activities with family members, friends, and other loved ones often feel that their relationships are stronger and generally better. The reason for this is because shared recreational activities are essentially “quality time” spent with others, which facilitates social skills as well as relationship-building.

  • and More!

Being that Coalition Recovery is located in coastal Tampa, Florida, we offer many forms of water-based recreation. Some of the options available include paddle-boarding, kayaking, and canoeing, but there are also more straightforward options, including simply going for a swim. Of course, if you’re more interested in forms of land-based recreation, we’ve got you covered there, too. For instance, you might enjoy biking, going for nature walks or walking tours of Tampa, trips to nearby museums and popular landmarks, or even a trip to the cinema to catch the latest film.

Of course, this is just a small sample of the recreational activities offered at Coalition Recovery. While we encourage recreation for many of the reasons that are described above, there’s another key component of recreation as part of an addiction treatment program. In essence, the recreational and leisurely activities that we offer are meant to help our patients learn that there are ways to enjoy oneself, one’s surroundings, and one’s cohorts without the interference of alcohol and drugs. Over the course of active addiction, many people come to see mind-altering substances as being a requirement for personal enjoyment, and once embarked on the recovery process, they must relearn that these substances are not necessary to relax and have fun.

Nature Outings

In addition to the various forms of recreation named above, Coalition Recovery offers regular outings to the beautiful beaches of Tampa. As a patient, you can take full advantage of our close proximity to the Florida shorelines as we provide regular transport to and from the beach. There’s a reason why people associate beaches with vacations and leisure: there is something about the experience of standing with your feet in the sand and looking out at the ocean that instills a sense of deep calmness and serenity. We are also located next to multiple state parks that we take advantage of. We use our variety of environments to instill the importance nature can have on bringing the entire body to a sense of mindfulness and tranquility.
